Are image sizes optimized for content delivery?
I am new to beefree and in reading over the information on content delivery overage charges, I began to wonder if there are any automatic image optimization options available. I have searched through the getting started information and the forums and haven't found an answer.
The scenario I am wondering about is this:
Being a fairly unsophisticated computer user, my marketing person creates a new email template using some graphics that my design department created for general print use. What they don't realize is that the images are extremely large. For example, they may want it to display at 200 px, and when they add it to their template, they resize the image container box to 200 px, never realizing that it is really 6000 px wide and is 10 MB in size.
They then export the template as HTML (using hosted image /CDN) links and send the email out to a bunch of recipients. Now each time one of the recipients opens the email, I am being metered for a 10 MB image when what I actually needed it for could have been accomplished better with a 200 KB image. Not only would it count as much less bandwidth, but it would load faster in the email and would not have resizing/scaling artifact from being reduced to 200 px for display which would be a much better user experience, especially on low-bandwidth devices.
So my question is this:
Does the export feature scale the images down the the size set in the template, or does it just use the original image no matter how large it is? When this image is delivered for display in an email, does it count as the full image size (example: 10 MB instead of the 200 KB sized equivalent) against my bandwidth usage?
If this is what happens, then I will need to have the people creating templates submit their images to someone in-house who can then resize them to an appropriate size for use in the templates to avoid these issues, but I don't want to have to go through those steps if the images are going to be scaled down on export anyway.
Does anyone here have any definitive answers on how images that are scaled down in a template design are actually delivered?
Thanks,
M.

Hey Matthew! Thanks for reaching out to the Beefree community with your question. I'm more than happy to answer it and hopefully provide some additional clarity!
To begin, our builder resizes images that are wider than 1920px when they are uploaded. This is based solely on width in pixels, not the file size in bytes. You can read more information about this in the following Help Center article: Using the File Manager.
With that said, for optimal results, we recommend uploading images that are appropriately sized for emails (typically no wider than 1920px) and have a good level of compression. Our designers and development team suggest using high-resolution images with appropriate compression to ensure quality and performance.
Lastly, regarding export operations, no resizing or other operations are applied to images during export. Once an image is uploaded and possibly resized, it remains in its final state unless you overwrite it with new content within the File manager.
I hope that this answers your question! Of course, if you have any follow-up questions, just reply to this thread and we'll be happy to answer them.
